DAWLISH WIN AFTER EXTRA TIME

MYERS' MEN GOING FOR A CUP DOUBLE

LES PHILLIPS CUP PREVIEW

Dawlish town target their second cup final win inside a week when they line-up against Devon rivals Bideford in the Toolstation Western League's domestic competition for the Les Phillips Cup at Elmore tomorrow (3pm).It's a competition they've never won whereas Bideford have been there, done it and brandish the tee shirt, yet the gap between the two clubs no longer exists after a change in fortunes that's seen Dawlish finish runners-up to champions Truro City and Bideford having to settle for sixth place, almost 20 points further back.

The great strides made at Sandy Lane over the past 12 months was also reflected this week when Dawlish beat Willand Rovers 3-1 at Willand to lift the Devon County FA's St Luke's Challenge Bowl, a competition which Bideford also take part in along with Plymouth Argyle, Exeter City and Torquay United.

"The last couple of seasons have seen an upturn in our fortunes, but I'll always have great respect for teams managed by Sean Joyce," said Dawlish player-manager Chris Myers.

"We played in the same team for Torquay United, and have remained good friends ever since.

"They (Bideford) haven't retained the Western League championship this time round, but both league games this season - we won 3-0 up there, and drew 1-1 at our place - were really tough and I don't expect anything different tomorrow.

"Winning the St Luke's Bowl on Tuesday was a big boost, of course, but there will be two good sides out there tomorrow and we'll have to be at our very best to lift the trophy."

Just how tough it will be for Dawlish is mirrored in Myers' decision to add striker Radley Veale to Tuesday's winning squad now that Veale is back from his loan spell with Tiverton Town.

Veale was in the squad for the last league game of the season against Bishop Sutton, but his inclusion for this underlines that Myers sees Bideford as far tougher opposition than that presented by Willand.

By the same token, he is taking something of a gamble by including 17-year old former Foxhole United Colts player James Spence on the substitutes bench.

"I brought him on as substitute at left wing-back in the St Luke's Bowl final, and he didn't look out of place, so I think he deserves another chance," said Myers, who has named the following squad:

Draper, Fields, Bowden, Moseley, Fenner, Pugh, Laughton, Vicary, Stevens, Head, Veale, Lynch, Mudge, Spence.

TOWN'S CUP GLORY

Dawlish town are the new Westinsure St Luke's Challenge Cup holders - 25 years after they last won the Devon County FA competition that includes Plymouth Argyle, Exeter City and Torquay United. The Sandy Lane club, already assured of the runners-up trophy in the Premier Division of the Toolstation Western League, beat league rivals Willand Rovers 3-1 at Willand's Silver Street on Tuesday.

Now player-manager Chris Myers has his sights trained on this Saturday when Dawlish face another of their league rivals - Bideford - in the final of the Western League's Les Phillips Cup at Elmore.

The game against Willand was not pretty to watch because of the rutted end-of-season pitch, but Town's greater work-rate saw them to victory after first half goals from Liam Moseley and Darren Vicary, and a superb piece of opportunism when Vicary snatched his second after the interval.

"I felt we were the better side after the break, and that third goal was brilliant after the Willand goalkeeper cleared straight to Vicary while trying to dummy Antony Lynch and Jamie Mudge with his kick," said Myers.

"It couldn't have fallen to a better player as far as we're concerned, because Vicary has a magic left-foot and he lobbed it from something like 40 yards over the goalkeeper's head with the keeper stranded off his line. It was a goal worthy of winning any final."

Right wing-back Moseley had earlier given Dawlish a fourth minute lead when he linked up with his attack to head past Brian Cann after the defenders in front of the Willand keeper failed to clear their lines.

Willand had their best spell of pressure for 20 or so minutes after that, and levelled through striker Danny Bailey after turning Town centre-half Craig Fenner, but Vicary restored Town's lead before the interval with a shot that curled its way into a corner of the net.

A call from Myers for more talking amongst themselves and better communication brought an improvement to Dawlish's game during the second 45 minutes, with Vicary's stunning goal putting the seal on victory.
MYERS PLANNING TO LOOK AT KIDS IN FINAL

Dawlish Town manager Chris Myers won't be afraid to pitch the youngsters in to tonight's St Luke's Bowl final away to Willand Rovers (7.30pm).Myers has been impressed by reports from the reserve team management on the performances of wing-back James Spence. sweeper Joe Crooks and midfielder Liam Jones.

Now the Western League Premier Division season is out of the way, Myers would like to have a look at his next generation of players at a step up from what they are used to.

"The young lads have done well in the reserves and now is a good time to see what they are made of," said Myers.

"They will all be on the bench to start with, but I will be looking for the opportunity to get them on."

Other than midfielder Adam Shearer, still out with a back injury, Myers has a full strength squad at his disposal.

Liam Moseley has filled in for Shearer and made the shirt his own in a short time.

for the first of two cup finals in the space of five days.

Dawlish will be aiming for a second trophy on Saturday when they face Bideford at Elmore's ground in Tiverton in the final of the Les Phillips Cup.

Looking at tonight's game, Myers said it was inevitably going to be a close affair.

"We were second in the league, they were third and we had two pretty close games with them," said Myers.

"I expect this to be another close game, but it should be a good one."

NEWTON ABBOT WIN PROMOTION
The final honours in Division One East of the Carlsberg South West Peninsula League were finally resolved on Thursday night, when Newton Abbot drew 1-1 at Coach Road with champions Budleigh Salterton.

The point was enough for Newton to deny Exmouth promotion and take their place in the Premier Division next season instead. The Abbots needed all three points to take second place, so that went to the watching Plymstock United team, who were celebrating at the final whistle along with the home contingent.

Budleigh opened the scoring on four minutes through top scorer Danny Williams, but the goal that earned Newton promotion came on 52 minutes, when Richard Whatman headed home a Shane Shobrooke corner.

BOWKER'S MEN MUST BOUNCE RIGHT BACK

CARLSBERG SOUTH WEST PENINSULA LEAGUE DIVISION ONE EAST

Newton abbot's 3-0 home defeat by Exmouth Town on Friday night all but destroyed the Coach Road outfit's hopes of lifting the runners-up trophy but their promotion ambitions are still alive.Exmouth, the only other promotion candidate, moved a point ahead of Tony Bowker's side but have completed their fixtures leaving Newton requiring at least a point from next Thursday's final league game when champions Budleigh Salterton provide the opposition.

The Abbots' required a point from the night-time encounter at Coach Road but never really recovered from finding themselves two goals down after just 11 minutes.

Ben Shephard's last act of the match, before limping off with a torn hamstring, was to dive full length and head home Matt Dawson's right-wing cross.

Three minutes later Exmouth were celebrating again when Danny Burwood followed up on his own free-kick to lash home a low drive from 20 yards.

Newton came back strongly but lacked the punch up front to get back into the game which was highlighted when Shaun Friend fired a clear shooting chance straight at Tim Thorne.

Richard Whatman then sent his header back across goal and wide before Friend's free header also failed to find the target.

Exmouth could have made the home side pay but Daniel Plater fired a good chance wide before the action switched back to the other end where Thorne tipped Stuart Bowker's header on to the crossbar.

Jason Heath volleyed wide from 15 yards as Newton ended the half on the attack but it was Exmouth who were unlucky in the opening minutes of the second half as Ryan McManus hit a fine volley on to Matt Congdon's post.

The home side came back strongly with Shane Shobbrook twice wasting good chances before Darren Vicary's 20 yard free-kick found the outside of the Town upright.

For all their attacking Newton could not break through the Town defence and they were made to pay two minutes from time.

Richard Pears' superb pass found Dawson who shrugged off his marker before firing low past Congdon and inside the far post.

"We huffed and puffed and got nowhere," was the response from Newton Abbot manager Tony Bowker.
